Breaking Ground on the Future of Union Memorial School

| By

Yesterday marked an exciting milestone for the Colchester School District with the groundbreaking of the Union Memorial School Additions and Renovations project, a transformative investment in early education for the youngest learners in the community. When complete, the reimagined Union Memorial School will serve students and administrators in pre-K through second grade.

The project is a two-phase effort designed around minimizing disruption to the school community while delivering a modern, purpose-built learning environment. The centerpiece of the project is a new east wing – a two-story addition with a full basement totaling 50,000 square feet of new construction. The new wing will bring fresh classroom space, updated facilities, and a building envelope built for Vermont’s climate and the demands of 21st-century education.

The west wing will undergo a complete single-story renovation, including new siding and refreshed interior finishes throughout 14,000 square feet of existing space. A portion of the current wing will be demolished to make way for the improved layout, ensuring every square foot of the finished school serves the needs of students and staff.

Early sitework is currently underway on a fast-tracked, one-month schedule that includes removal of an old septic field and installation of a new septic system and pump station. The team is also rerouting a gas line that ran through the new building’s footprint, with installation of a temporary line to keep the existing school running without interruption throughout construction.

Once students and staff return to school this fall, the pace will pick up quickly. Steel erection for the new East Wing will begin in September and is scheduled for completion before the first Vermont snowflakes arrive.

This project represents the continuation of a strong relationship between PC Construction and the Colchester School District. Just over a year ago, PC broke ground on Porters Point School, a similar facility serving pre-K through grade 2 students in the same community. We couldn’t be more excited to carry that partnership directly into the Union Memorial project!
