Project Overview
The Glencoe Water Treatment Plant Expansion focuses on improving treatment capacity, lowering operating costs, and preserving Florida’s natural resources. The project replaces aging 1970s-era lime softening reactor clarifiers with advanced Veolia ACTINA pellet softening system, extending the service life of the existing facility by at least 30 years while delaying the need for a costly reverse osmosis treatment system.
As the largest application of advanced pellet softening technology in Florida, the project provides New Smyrna Beach Utilities (NSBU) with a sustainable and cost-effective water treatment solution.
The expansion includes the new 8,500-square-foot pellet softening facility with three pellet reactors, administrative spaces, advanced electrical infrastructure, and improved site utilities. Work also includes extensive pilot testing of the pellet softening system to verify the new technology best meets NSBU’s goals.
The project boosts plant capacity to 8.7 mgd, with provisions for future growth up to 11.6 mgd, ensuring NSBU is positioned to meet increasing demand without overextending its draw on the Floridan Aquifer or compromising its commitment to high-quality potable water. In addition, the new system delivers meaningful operational improvements, utilizing 45% fewer chemicals and consuming 50% less energy while eliminating lime sludge disposal and cutting byproduct waste by 80%.
