University of Vermont On-Campus Multipurpose Center

This multi-sequence project transformed Gutterson Fieldhouse, home of UVM Hockey, and reimagined the University’s recreation and wellness facilities. The renovations and additions preserved the historic rink while delivering modern, high-performance spaces that support student athletes, students, and the broader campus community.

Renovations to Gutterson included complex steel reinforcements of its unique barreled rink roof, the addition of a new media loft and upgrades to team spaces such as a new varsity strength and conditioning facility and women’s ice hockey locker room. Construction of a one-story addition houses the new sports medicine department, the men’s ice hockey locker room and a film room and connects Gutterson to UVM’s Forbush Natatorium.

Across UVM’s health and wellness facilities, the project delivered multipurpose athletic courts, a bouldering wall, a state-of-the-art spin room, a hydrotherapy center, academic space for student-athletes, a modern sports television director’s suite, a new hospitality suite for UVM athletics supporters, and numerous multipurpose and office spaces.

Over more than five years onsite, PC’s work touched approximately 80% of UVM’s athletic campus, totaling over 95,000 square feet of renovations 14,000 square feet of additions. The effort was supported by extensive early work, including site and utility work, deep foundations and support of excavation for future expansion.

All construction was carefully coordinated around schedules for multiple Division I athletic programs and ongoing events, all while keeping the facility fully operational.
