The Mount Holly Wastewater Treatment Plant Decommissioning project in suburban Charlotte, North Carolina, has wrapped up, successfully ending a year-long effort to demolish the existing plant and restore the space to a safe and clean natural area for community.
Within weeks of winning the project, PC mobilized onsite, prepping to remove the decades-old infrastructure and prepare the site for its future use. One of the first major obstacles involved removing more than 4,000 tons of residual sludge. This operation required careful coordination, environmental compliance, odor control, transportation logistics, and continuous monitoring to ensure safe disposal while maintaining community relations.
Crews safely demolished tanks, structures, foundations, underground utilities, piping systems, and electrical infrastructure while managing unforeseen conditions common to older treatment plants. As the project progressed, the owner’s vision expanded and resulted in millions of dollars in additional scopes, including parking lots, storm drainage improvements, and irrigation systems. The PC team successfully integrated these changes without losing momentum.
All told, the team imported nearly 125,000 cubic yards of fill material – a massive coordination of production schedules, trucking operations, coping with adverse weather conditions, and the provision of continuous safe site access.
This is one of the most significant demolition and earthwork transformation projects completed by our local team. It required extensive demolition, environmental management, earthwork operations, and infrastructure improvements. Through continuous planning; daily communication with the City, subcontractors, and suppliers; and active field engagement, we executed this high-risk work safely and with the highest quality.
The result at Mount Holly is a clean, safe, and enjoyable area, which will soon include two athletic fields, a walking track, and access to the adjacent Tuckaseege Park – turning the footprint of a wastewater treatment plant into a green space for future generations to enjoy.
