Building a Legacy for Maine’s Natural Resources

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Augusta, MEPC is helping the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) enter a new era with the renovation and expansion of its headquarters in Augusta. This innovative facility blends historic preservation, modern functionality, and environmental responsibility. Upon completion, the new facility will reflect the agency’s enduring mission of preserving inland fisheries, wildlife, and critical habitats statewide.

At the project’s core is the 16,500-square-foot renovation of the existing historic three-story brick building, including preservation of the exterior façade and modernization of the interior to meet operational needs. Two three-story building additions totaling 27,000 square feet and an 8,750-square-foot detached storage barn bring the total project to more than 50,000 square feet of renovated and new space. This includes more than 100 individual offices, four laboratories, eight conference rooms, and specialized facilities including a museum, AV room, and four kitchens.

Functionality and sustainability are the primary drivers, manifesting in purpose-built spaces designed to support research, collaboration, and public engagement. By integrating a geothermal heating and cooling system and utilizing mass timber construction—including glulam beams and cross-laminated timber that honor Maine’s forestry heritage—the design significantly reduces the building’s environmental impact. These high-performance strategies directly support the pursuit of LEED Silver certification, underscoring MDIFW’s commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.

More than a new building, the headquarters represents a long-term investment in conservation—one that respects the past while preparing the agency for decades of service to Maine’s wildlife, landscapes, and people. It’s a modern, efficient home that supports scientists, administrators, and conservation professionals—and PC is excited to bring it all to life!
