The Vermont chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers recently held its annual meeting featuring a tour of the CCTA Downtown Transit Center currently under construction in Burlington, Vermont. Following the tour, I was given the opportunity to present about the planning, design and construction of the Transit Center. During the presentation, I outlined the extensive planning effort to define the location and project scope; the extensive value engineering effort associated with the project; and construction challenges that include maintaining access, limited laydown space, and utility and underground work.
The project includes the construction of a new 10,250-square-foot facility and covered canopy space. The new Transit Center replaces the current Cherry Street terminal with a modern facility that will support growing ridership, offer a number of amenities, improve overall customer experience and promote economic development.
